Easy Berry Chia Seed Jam (Printable)

A quick, vibrant spread made with mixed berries and chia seeds for natural sweetness.

# What You’ll Need:

→ Fruit

01 - 2 cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen; strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)

→ Sweetener

02 - 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, adjusted to taste

→ Thickener

03 - 2 tablespoons chia seeds

→ Flavor

04 - ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
05 - ½ teaspoon fresh lemon juice

# How To Make It:

01 - Place the berries in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to break down and release their juices, approximately 5 minutes.
02 - Use a fork or potato masher to mash the berries to your desired consistency, whether chunky or smooth.
03 - Stir in the maple syrup (or honey), chia seeds, vanilla extract, and lemon juice until well combined.
04 - Remove from heat and let the mixture sit for at least 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The jam will thicken as the chia seeds absorb the liquid.
05 - Taste the jam and adjust sweetness if necessary by adding more sweetener.
06 - Transfer the jam to a clean jar. Allow to cool completely before sealing and refrigerating. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It transforms fading fruit into something precious in minutes
  • The texture from chia seeds feels luxurious without any pectin or complicated canning
  • You control exactly how sweet it goes, unlike store bought versions
02 -
  • This jam will continue thickening in the refrigerator, so don't worry if it seems slightly loose while warm
  • Frozen berries release more water than fresh, so the jam might need an extra minute or two to reach the right consistency
  • The chia seeds will settle at the bottom of the jar, so give it a good stir before each use
03 -
  • Double or triple the recipe if you have an abundance of berries it freezes beautifully for up to three months
  • Let the jam cool completely in the saucepan before transferring to the jar to avoid condensation
  • Write the date on your jar because even though it seems unlikely you'll forget when you made it, you absolutely will
